The install crew should not discover the project for the first time when the truck arrives.

The Commercial Sign Installation Site Survey & Field Measurement Workbook is a professional field resource created specifically for the commercial sign industry.

Built by The Signitects LLC, this workbook helps sign companies document the physical conditions that affect installation before the crew is dispatched.

It goes beyond simply measuring the available wall space.

It helps document how the sign will be accessed, what it is mounting to, what may interfere with the installation, what equipment may need to reach the location, what existing conditions need to be addressed, and what the crew needs to know before installation day.

This is not a generic site survey checklist.

It is an installation-focused field planning system.

BUILT AROUND THE PHYSICAL INSTALLATION

This workbook is designed to help answer questions such as:

Where exactly is the sign going?

What measurements locate it on the building?

What is the visible mounting surface?

What obstructions surround the sign?

What existing signage must be removed?

What condition could be left behind after removal?

Where is the observable electrical service?

Can installation equipment physically reach the location?

Is horizontal reach different from vertical height?

Can the truck, lift, or crane reach the work area?

What ground conditions affect access?

Can the sign physically move through the building?

Are there work hour or property restrictions?

Where can materials be staged?

Are other trades required before installation?

What conditions are still unknown?

HEIGHT IS NOT REACH

One of the key principles in this workbook is:

Sign height alone does not determine installation access.

A sign at the same vertical height may require completely different installation planning when conditions such as:

Canopies
Landscaping
Building setbacks
Curbs
Parking
Ground conditions
Obstructions
or equipment setup limitations

change the horizontal reach.

The workbook helps field teams document those conditions before dispatch.

PHOTO DOCUMENTATION

The workbook also reinforces a simple field photography system:

WIDE
Show the overall installation environment and access.

MEDIUM
Show the sign location and surrounding conditions.

DETAIL
Show mounting surfaces, penetrations, electrical conditions, fasteners, damage, and other installation details.

The purpose is to give the next person enough visual information to understand the site without having been there.

EXISTING SIGN REMOVAL

Removing an existing sign can create additional work.

The workbook helps document conditions such as:

Existing anchors
Wall penetrations
Sealant
Ghosting
Paint differences
Visible wall damage
Electrical penetrations
Removal access
Patching responsibility
Painting responsibility

It does not assume that removing a sign automatically restores the wall.

BUILT FOR REAL SIGN INSTALLATION TEAMS

This resource is designed for:

Commercial sign installers
Sign surveyors
Sign project managers
Installation coordinators
Sign shop owners
Estimators
Designers
Production teams
Field coordinators
New employees learning installation surveys

It can also be used as an internal training and process resource for sign companies that want more consistent field information before installation.

DIFFERENCE FROM A GENERAL SITE SURVEY

The Signitects also publishes:

The Ultimate Commercial Sign Site Survey Checklist

That resource focuses on collecting a complete commercial sign site survey.

This workbook goes deeper into the physical installation conditions.

Its focus is:

Can the sign actually be installed as planned?

What measurements will the installer need?

What surface will the crew encounter?

What must be removed?

What equipment can reach the location?

What could interfere with installation?

How will materials reach the work area?

What logistical conditions need to be resolved before the crew arrives?

The two resources serve different purposes and may be used together.

IMPORTANT

This workbook provides a practical framework for documenting commercial sign installation conditions and field measurements.

It does not replace:

Engineering
Structural analysis
Electrical review
Architectural review
Code research
Permitting
Accessibility review
Manufacturer instructions
Safety procedures
Equipment inspection
Utility locating
Qualified trade judgment
Licensed professional services

Site conditions vary significantly.

Measurements, wall construction, electrical conditions, equipment access, underground conditions, structural conditions, traffic conditions, and installation requirements must be verified for the specific project.

Do not assume that a field observation alone confirms structural capacity, electrical suitability, engineering requirements, or code compliance.
